On Sunday 31 August, Medical Research Foundation-funded researcher Dr Jenni Naisby swapped the research lab for running shoes as she took on the Middlesbrough 10K – raising £455 in support of the Foundation.

The Foundation funded my fellowship, which is exploring pain in Parkinson’s – an area that’s really important but not well understood. I wanted to give something back, and the 10K was a brilliant way to do that.

Jenni, who is a physiotherapist and mid-career fellow, is leading pioneering research into pain management for people with Parkinson’s - an area that remains underfunded despite being a major issue for many people living with the condition.

She was joined in the run by her mother-in-law Mary, and cheered on by her husband and two children, making the day a real family effort.

“The Foundation funded my fellowship, which is exploring pain in Parkinson’s – an area that’s really important but not well understood. Their support has not only advanced this crucial research but has also helped my career development, from training opportunities to securing an academic promotion. I wanted to give something back, and the 10K was a brilliant way to do that,” said Jenni.

Her current project involves co-designing a pain management toolkit with people living with Parkinson’s, alongside a training package to support clinicians. The aim is to ensure that people’s experiences of pain are better understood and addressed in everyday care.

Reflecting on race day, Jenni said:

“It was such a good atmosphere, and running past Middlesbrough landmarks like the Transporter Bridge and Middlesborough football stadium made it even more enjoyable. It was a lovely sunny day, and having my family there made it really special.”

Jenni also highlighted how the event helped raise awareness of the Foundation’s work:

“Not everyone knows who funds my research, so sharing my 10K fundraising gave me the chance to talk about the Medical Research Foundation and the difference it makes. I’m so grateful to everyone who sponsored me – their support really motivated me to keep training.”

The Medical Research Foundation would like to congratulate Jenni and Mary on their fantastic achievement and thank them for their fundraising efforts. The money they raised will help us support more vital research into underfunded health conditions, enabling researchers like Jenni to push forward discoveries that improve lives.
