Adolescent skin disorders
According to a 2020 survey by the All Parliamentary Group on Skin, 98 per cent of patients with a skin disorder report that their condition affects their emotional and psychological wellbeing.
For adolescents, skin disorders can be physically and mentally scarring, yet effective treatments are scarce.
What are adolescent skin disorders?
Skin conditions are common during adolescence, a period of significant physical and psychological development. Eczema alone, a commonly occurring inflammatory skin disease, affects 20% of children and 8% of adults.
Dealing with a skin disorder during puberty can be particularly overwhelming, often impacting self-esteem, and for some, leading to more serious mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
Why is more research needed?
Despite the prevalence of adolescent skin disorders, there are limited treatment options available.
The direct cost of uncontrolled eczema alone to the national health service was estimated at being £257 million in 2020 (“Costs of AD” (2023). Demos). However, in 2022, only £13.1 million was invested into skin research.
To plug this funding gap, and to improve treatment options, we are supporting research that will increase understanding of the mechanisms underpinning skin disorders relevant to young people and adolescents. Through our funding, we are helping researchers to develop innovative treatment approaches and to reduce the long-term impact on both physical health and psychological wellbeing.
Funded projects include: the impact of atopic dermatitis (the most common form of eczema) on adolescents’ mental health and neurodevelopment; the causes of orofacial granulomatosis (a rare condition affecting the skin around the mouth); the link between severe itching, sleep disturbance and brain function; and more.
Through investment in this field, we hope to improve the diagnosis and treatment of adolescent skin disorders.
