Dr Nutmeg Hallett from the University of Birmingham will explore how individuals who have experienced childhood trauma maintain or regain their mental health into adulthood. While existing research often focuses on the negative outcomes of trauma, this study applies the concept of ‘salutogenesis’, which emphasises factors that promote and sustain health rather than those that cause illness. Central to this approach is the idea of a ‘sense of coherence’ - how comprehensible, manageable and meaningful life feels - which can play an essential role in overcoming adversity.
The project involves three phases: a scoping review of literature, qualitative interviews using an innovative ‘Tree of Life’ method to understand personal experiences, and co-designed workshops to develop actionable recommendations for professionals. This collaborative approach will ensure that the perspectives of trauma survivors and health professionals are integrated.
Dr Hallett's research will shift the focus from pathology to resilience, aiming to provide evidence-based strategies to improve services for trauma survivors. By identifying and strengthening protective factors, the findings could inform interventions and policies that enhance long-term mental health outcomes for affected individuals. The study also lays the groundwork for future salutogenic interventions, contributing to more compassionate care and support.
