Professor Sumit Kane is tackling the growing issue of violence against doctors by conducting workshops for healthcare professionals across India.
Professor Sumit Kane is tackling the problem of violence against doctors in India. His team's research to-date has shown that he issue of violence against doctors in the country is underpinned by deeper influences, such as increasing commercialisation, corporatisation, and specialisation in healthcare provision.
With the Changing Policy and Practice (CPP) Award, Professor Kane's team plan to conduct a series of workshops based on the outcomes of their research. These workshops will be activity-based, and held in India with practicing doctors, healthcare managers, and office bearers of state-level medical associations.
The team have developed a structured 3-hour self-reflection workshop that offers a safe space for doctors to engage with the research findings and with difficult questions about their practice, ethics, and changes required in the profession.
Overall, Professor Kane's team will conduct 12 workshops, each with 20–30 participants - six for younger doctors and six for senior doctors. To promote wider dissemination and sustainable change, they aim to accredit these as Continuing Medical Education activities.
They will also establish a 'Community of Practice' for ongoing engagement. Alongside this, they will co-develop media content with participants to further disseminate key research messages.
