What we do
We exist to advance medical research, improve human health and change people’s lives. You can help us do it.
Changing Policy and Practice
Professor Susannah Mayhew aims to reshape outbreak and humanitarian policy and practice approaches and guidelines by improving engagement with communities and frontline health responders in Sierra Leone.
With funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC), Professor Mayhew and the team from LSHTM found local responses to the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone needed more rapid coordination with local frontline responders, yet subsequent pandemic responses show that humanitarian and outbreak responses have been slow to change.
With the Changing Policy and Practice funding, Professor Mayhew and the team will produce a range of dissemination materials including short films of successful community-led responses; a policy brief summarising key findings and implications for policy; and a “How To” guide for ministries and agencies to re-design crisis-response.
These will be presented, debated and validated at a workshop bringing local wisdom and voices into dialogue with key decision makers. The team will widely disseminate the finalised briefs and guides and provide ongoing support to workshop participants to facilitate policy and practice change.
Changing Policy and Practice Awards provide support for the dissemination of MRC and Medical Research Foundation-funded research results beyond the traditional vehicles of journal publications and academic conference presentations.
The broader aim is to influence healthcare and behaviour, by taking the latest research evidence directly to patients, practitioners and policymakers.
We fund and support the most promising health research wherever we discover great opportunities that are not being pursued. We use our donations responsibly and ensure we make the greatest impact where it is most needed.
