It is estimated that around 2.6 million people in the UK have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

ADHD has historically been viewed as a childhood condition, but research shows that it commonly persists into adulthood. Younger adults with ADHD face significant challenges, including mental and physical health issues, difficulties accessing healthcare, and earlier mortality. However, little is known about how ADHD affects adults aged 50 and older, leaving their needs poorly understood and unmet.

Dr Amber John from the University of Liverpool aims to better understand the experiences of people aged 50+ with ADHD to improve their health and wellbeing.

Dr John and her team will:

  • Interview adults aged 50+ with ADHD to better understand their journey, from diagnosis to navigating support services, and the ageing process.
  • Use large health datasets to look at mental and physical health problems in people with ADHD over time.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of NHS psychological therapy services to treat depression and anxiety in people with ADHD.

This project will improve understanding of the experiences and healthcare needs of people aged 50+ with ADHD. Dr John hopes that this project will guide future work to develop tailored support, helping people with ADHD live healthier and happier lives while reducing health inequalities.
