Science Bake Off winner meets Josh Smalley
Our Research Bakers ambassador, Josh Smalley, congratulated our star baker in person at this year's New Scientist Live!
Last weekend, we welcomed the winner of our Instagram Science Bake Off competition, Anshuli from the University of Bristol, to New Scientist Live 2025 - the UK's biggest science festival!
Science Bake Off
To celebrate the intersection of science and creativity, we launched our Instagram Science Bake Off - inviting bakers of all levels to create a science-themed bake, take a photo, and share it with us. From chemistry-themed cupcakes to biology-based biscuits, the challenge sparked a wave of imaginative entries.
We were delighted to welcome Josh Smalley, Great British Bake Off finalist and our very own Research Bakers ambassador, as the judge for this competition. The winner would receive four tickets to this year's New Scientist Live.
The winning bake
With so many creative bakes submitted, Josh Smalley had his work cut out for him choosing the winner. But one bake stood out: Anshuli’s vanilla and beetroot cupcakes, inspired by her PhD research on responsive and pressured feeding.

Our Research Bakers groups competition is still open
If you are feeling inspired and want the chance the meet Josh Smalley, consider entering our community groups competition!

The meet up
After announcing her win, we caught up with Anshuli at New Scientist Live, where she explored everything from inspiring talks by leading scientists to hands-on exhibits featuring robots and drones.
Best of all, Anshuli got to see our Research Bakers ambassador in action, as Josh took centre stage to deliver a spooky food demo, complete with live Halloween-themed experiments.
After the show, Josh met Anshuli in person and congratulated her on her scientific creativity and impressive bakes.
