What is the aim of the funding call?

This Prize is intended to celebrate the achievements of outstanding researchers who are making an impact in lupus research and have demonstrated their potential to be a research leader of the future.

Who can apply?

This competition is open to UK researchers at eligible institutions (UK HEIs, Research Council research institutes, hospitals, and other independent research organisations). Applicants must be in the process of, or have recently, transitioned to an independent research position. They should demonstrate productivity across their past career and an upward trajectory, as well as be able to demonstrate a track record of nationally competitive research, an ability to manage their own independent research group currently or in the near future and have clear plans to develop into an internationally recognised leader in the field.

The impacts of COVID-19 on your research

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant and variable impact on researchers' careers. The Foundation is committed to helping mitigate this is much as possible through our grant-making policies and practices. We are pleased to support the Academy of Medical Sciences Cross-funder COVID-19 memory statement as co-signatories.

We are providing applicants with a dedicated space within our funding application forms to detail how their career progression has been impacted by COVID-19. Additionally, guidance will be given to our Expert Reviewers and Panel Members so that they are able to take the impact of the pandemic on an applicant’s career into account, when they are making funding recommendations

Which fields of research will the prize cover?

We are interested in receiving applications from emerging research leaders, working directly in research relevant to lupus and related conditions such as myositis, Sjögren’s syndrome, autoimmune thyroid disease and serositis. Applicants will be required to demonstrate their track record in their field of research. More information on the review process and impact can be found in the Guidelines for Applicants.

Funding available

Up to £200,000 is available to recognise the work of emerging research leaders who have made significant contributions to research in lupus. A top prize of £100,000 will be awarded and smaller prizes of various amounts for second place and highly commended candidates.

The research that will be supported in this competition was made possible by a generous gift in Will from Erina Herrick.
